Before you can start teaching English in China and traveling around the world, you need to get your passport! Depending on your home country, the process is pretty straightforward, but you need to make sure you follow the passport instructions correctly so there are no delays.


Read on to find out how to get your passport if you are from a native-English speaking country other than the U.S.


UK - How To Get Your U.K. Passport




Applying For Your First Adult Passport


What documents must you have?



1. Who can apply?


  • A British national eligible for a British passport.
  • An adult passport is valid for 10 years.
  • Apply for a first adult passport if you’re aged 16 or over and never had a child passport


2. Apply online for a UK passport


  • This website is where you can apply, renew, replace or update your passport and pay for it online.
  • You need a debit or credit card.
  • Other ways to apply: pick up a passport application form from your local post office and apply by post or use the post office check and send service.


3. Apply by post


  • Get a paper form from a post office that offers the passport check and send service.
  • Fill in sections 1,2,3,4,5 and 9. You need to get someone else known as your ‘counter signatory’ to fill in section 10 and certify your photo.
  • Post your form, photos and documents using the pre-printed envelope that comes with the form or take them to the post office if you want to use the passport check and send service.


4. Passport Interviews


  • After you apply, you may be asked to attend an interview to confirm your identity.
  • You’ll receive a letter from HM Passport Office.
  • The interview is to make sure you are who you claim to be, any personal information used in the interview will be destroyed shortly after your passport is issued.

3. Express service


You need to book a passport office appointment and pay online. You can book an appointment up to 3 weeks in advance. This service has multiple services depending on what you need your passport urgently for, please see: https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently


4. Getting your passport back


  • Via post
  • Normal post or pay an extra £5 to get them secure delivery, choose this service on your application.

  4. Check guidance notes to find out what supporting documents you must send with your application

How To Get Your Ireland Passport





How to apply for your first Irish passport as an Adult:


  1. Must apply in person, you cannot apply online.
  2. You must be an Irish citizen by birth, descent or naturalization (spouse or civil partner of an Irish Citizen)
  3. Must be over 18 and not had a passport for a long time since having a child’s passport
  4. If the name you are known by is different from the name on your birth certificate and not through marriage, civil partnership or adoption, you will have to supply document evidence that you have been using the name continually for at least 2 years.
  5. 4 Identical recent photos of yourself with your application
  6. Two must be signed on the back by the person who witnesses the application
  7. The witness should also write the form number shown in section 9 of the application form on the two signed photo’s.

  1. Passport fee’s using An Post’s Passport Express (through embassy or consulate):
  2. Standard 10-year, 34-page passport (aged 18 and over): €80
  3. Large 10-year 66-page passport (aged 18 and over): €110
  4. These fee’s do not include the charge for using an express service (€9.50 per individual application)
  5. Passport fee’s when applying in person at a Passport office:
  6. Standard 10-year, 32-page passport (aged 18 and over): €95
  7. Large 10-year 66-page passport (aged 18 and over): €125
  8. Length of time it takes
  9. Passport service recommends you apply for a First passport at least 6 weeks prior to your travel date


Getting a passport if you’re outside Ireland:

  2. You can apply online
  3. You should allow at least 6-8 weeks for the processing of your passport via your local embassy or consulate
  4. Additional €5 postal fee if you reside outside of Ireland
  5. How to apply for a lost or stolen Irish passport
  6. You can apply online
  7. Contact your nearest Irish embassy or consulate immediately, you will be asked to confirm the loss in writing or, if you are applying for a new passport, to include the details in your application
  8. You must get in touch with local police and request a written statement you have reported the loss, you will require this to obtain an ‘emergecny travel document’

How To Get Your Canada Passport






Applying for a First-time passport


How to apply:

  • All new Canadian passport issued are 36-pae passports
  • You must be 16 years of age or over


  1. Complete application form
  2. Gather all documents
  3. Proof of Canadian citizenship (original only) – for example; birth certificate
  4. A document to support your identity
  5. 2 identical passport photos (name and address of photographer and date the photos were taken must be included on the back of 1 photo)
  6. Any valid Canadian travel document issued in your name
  7. Find a guarantor and 2 references
  8. You will need a guarantor to sign your application, one of your passport copies and all copies of supporting identity documents.
  9. You also need 2 references, they must have known you for at least 2 years but cannot be family or your guarantor
  10. Submit your application and pay your fee’s
  11. By mail: use a certified courier or traceable mail service
  12. Pay with Visa, Mastercard, American express credit card or certified cheque or money order. Debit cards are not accepted for applications submitted by mail or third party.
  13. Applying in person: credit card or prepaid card, debit card, certified cheque or money order
  14. No cash or personal cheques are taken
  15. Receiving your passport
  16. By mail: your passport will be returned by mail and may be in two separate packages
  17. In person: if paid for a pickup service then the pickup date will be indicated on your receipt
  18. Someone else: they have valid identification and written authorization from you


Passport Fees

  2. 5-year adult passport (age 16 and over): $120 CAN
  3. 10-year adult passport (age 16 and over): $160 CAN
  4. Expedited service – only in person
  5. Urgent pick up (end of next business day): $110 CAN
  6. Express pick up within 2-9 business days: $50 CAN
  7. Standard pick up on or after 10 business days: $20 CAN


Renew your passport outside of Canada and the US:


Submit your application to the nearest Government of Canada passport issuing office abroad.

  2. If you have a valid visa in your current passport then you need to state on the application you need the original passport back with said valid visa.
  3. Gather all necessary documents
  4. Most recent passport
  5. 2 identical passport photos (name and address of the photographer and date of photos taken on the back of 1 photo.

  7. Must have known you for 2 years, cannot be a family member or guarantor.
  8. Submit application and pay fee’s
  9. Payment

  12. Confirm methods of payment with the Government of Canada office abroad
  13. Receiving your passport
  14. Government of Canada passport issuing office abroad where you applied will let you know when your passport is ready and how to pick it up.

  1. Complete the application form
  2. Collect your citizenship and identity documents
  3. Confirm your Australian citizenship or Australian birth certificate
  4. Prove your personal identity with original documents
  5. Supporting identity documents
  6. Get your passport photos
  7. 2 identical colour photos, no more than 6 months old.
  8. Choose a guarantor/referee
  9. Must be an Australian citizen aged 18 years or older who has known you for at least 12 months but is not related to you or lives with you.
  10. Lodge your passport application in person
  11. Must be done in person
  12. Take: application / photos / citizenship and identity documents (will be copied and returned on the spot) and payment
  13. Costs
  14. 10-year valid passport $282 Australian Dollars
  15. For priority processing, pay an extra: $186 Australian Dollars
  16. Receive passport
  17. You should receive your passport back in approximately 3 weeks

  8. Choose a guarantor/referee
  9. Must be an Australian citizen aged 18 years or older who has known you for at least 12 months and possesses a current Australian passport issued with at least 2 years validity or currently employed in one of the approved professional or occupational groups
  10. Lodge your passport application in person
  11. Must be done in person at the Australian Diplomatic mission or consulate
  12. Take: application / photos / citizenship and identity documents (will be copied and returned on the spot) and payment
  13. Costs
  14. 10-year valid passport $282 Australian Dollars
  15. Overseas surcharge: $105 Australian Dollars
  16. Receive passport
  17. You should receive your passport back in approximately 3 weeks


How To Get Your New Zealand Passport





Apply online

  1. Set up a RealMe verified account in the same name you want in your passport
  2. Referee details
  3. Their passport number, name, phone number, email address, date of birth
  4. A digital photo (taken in the last 6 months, in colour as a JPG or JPEG file
  5. Credit card or debit card or Prezzi card: passport costs $180 New Zealand dollars
  6. You can download the ‘New adult passport application’ from the website

  12. Your passport will be couriered to you
  13. Length of process
  14. A standard passport takes up to 10 working days to process, add on the time for courier service.


Apply for a new passport outside of New Zealand - Renewing or if you have an Emergency



Contact your nearest New Zealand Embassy or High Commission or Consulate


  1. Beijing: New Zealand Embassy
  2. Chengdu: New Zealand Consulate General
  3. Guangzhou: New Zealand Consulate General
  4. Shanghai: New Zealand Consulate General


Apply online for an urgent passport, this is quicker and less expensive.

  • Costs: $500 New Zealand Dollars from a New Zealand Embassy or High Commission.
  • Only valid for 1 year, before it expires send it back to get a standard passport. An urgent passport applied online will give you a standard passport.



How To Get Your South African Passport







Applying for a first-time passport


In South Africa, there are many types of passports, you will need a Tourist passport (this allows you to travel the world)


Apply online


  1. Register a profile on eHomeAffairs
  2. Complete the application form
  3. Must be in black ink
  4. Upload supporting documents
  5. Must be original documents when handed in at the branch office
  6. For example; a birth certificate
  7. Make the online payment
  8. Make a booking at a Home Affairs enabled Bank offices
  9. Go to your appointment at the Home Affairs enabled Bank offices to verify your biometric details (photos, fingerprints and signature)
  10. Length of time: 7 – 21 working days to process the application and issue the passport. The tourist passport is valid for 10 years

  5. 400 South African Rand

Renew a passport or if you have lost a passport:

  3. Present an existing passport if renewing, if you have lost your passport you must provide a loss of passport report (DHA-335) and confirmation that you reported the loss to the police
